How to get to Dangar Island ...

Dangar Island is located just north of Sydney in the beautiful Hawkesbury River.

The nearest access point on the mainland is Brooklyn.








If coming by train:

The train station at Brooklyn is called Hawkesbury River station.

Trains arrive frequently (roughly every hour) from both directions and you can get specific times from CityRail. The trains generally align with the Dangar Island ferry service. Journey time from Central is one hour. (We will update this site if CityRail advise of any engineering works for that weekend which would entail a bus replacement service.)


If coming by car:

- take the Brooklyn turnoff from the F3 (Sydney to Newcastle freeway) on the northern side of the Hawkesbury River
- cross back over the Hawkesbury River on the old Pacific Highway
- turn left on to Brooklyn Road, and follow it down to the end (roughly 5kms) and find somewhere to park

The journey time from the Sydney Harbour Bridge in quiet traffic is around 45 minutes, however it can take much much longer if the roads are busy (eg rush hour on a Friday).

The Hawkesbury is a busy place on weekends and finding a parking space in Brooklyn can be especially difficult on weekends.


Getting across the water:

There is no bridge access to Dangar Island, so you'll need to get the Dangar Island Ferry or make your own arrangements with a water taxi.

Dangar Island Ferry service

The ferry runs roughly once an hour by a set timetable (make sure you use the right timetable as there is one for weekdays and one for weekends). Ferry's depart from the public wharf of Hawkesbury Marina (not Brooklyn Marina) which is on Dangar Road (just past the railway station). The standard cost for the ferry is $5.60 one-way.

The trip takes around 15 minutes if it comes direct to the island, or 30 minutes if it goes to Wobby Beach first. Don't get off at Wobby Beach!

The last ferry on week nights leaves Brooklyn for the island at 8pm.

The last ferry on the Saturday to get to the island in time for the ceremony leaves Brooklyn at 1pm.

Be warned, the ferry leaves per the timetable (even if you're struggling to find parking). If you just miss a ferry, the Angler's Rest pub located just back along Brooklyn Road can be a good option (but also a good way of missing the next ferry too).

Water taxi

Rick's Water Taxi provides a 24 hour service, which is useful outside of the ferry operating hours, or if you just miss a ferry and don't want to wait for the next one. The cost varies but is generally $20 one way, with an extra $10 charged for each additional passenger.
